Knowledge poisoning.

The information that dominates the digital world today will become what the world accepts as truth tomorrow. That is exactly why it is being poisoned.

Definition

Knowledge poisoning is the systematic manipulation of the digital knowledge ecosystem. It makes false, biased, or distorted information more discoverable and more widely cited than the truth, by people and by AI systems alike. Classic “fake news” spreads and fades. Poisoned knowledge settles into the sources that people and machines rely on, and keeps being repeated long after the original claim has been forgotten.

How knowledge poisoning works.

Knowledge planted in one place is cited in the next, surfaced by search, absorbed by AI, and pushed across social media, until millions accept it as fact and the loop begins again.

  1. Infiltration

Operatives build standing inside crowdsourced platforms, earning the credibility and editing rights needed to shape what those platforms hold.

  2. Knowledge poisoning

Coordinated networks manufacture artificial consensus and overwhelm human moderation.

  3. Search indexing

Algorithms push these manipulated sources to the top of results.

    Google, Bing

  4. AI training

Foundational models absorb the coordinated bias as factual baseline.

    AI engines

  5. AI generation

AI presents manipulated narratives as settled fact.

The cycle repeats: poisoned answers become tomorrow’s sources

The challenge.

The truth dominating the digital world today will shape the reality of tomorrow.

Today’s generations, the decision-makers of tomorrow, no longer build their understanding of the world through textbooks or institutions. They scroll. They search. They ask AI.

Social platforms, search engines, and AI have become the primary gateways to information, shaping how millions of people understand history, current events, and the world around them. The problem is that these systems are built on digital knowledge that anyone can influence.

For years, coordinated efforts have systematically poisoned the places where millions scroll, search, learn, and ask questions.

Historical distortions, biased information, and false narratives have been embedded into the everyday sources people trust, each feeding the next:

Wikipedia

Referenced across the web and fed into search engines and AI. Inaccuracies introduced here travel far beyond it.

Reddit & forums

Community discussions now surface in search results and AI answers, spreading misleading claims well beyond the original thread.

Social media

Algorithms reward engagement, so emotionally charged or manipulated content spreads long before facts catch up.

Knowledge poisoning doesn’t remain online. It shapes public understanding, influences the hearts and minds of future generations, and gradually rewrites the historical record.

Who is behind it.

The primary actors behind knowledge poisoning campaigns are state-sponsored entities, particularly from Russia and Iran, that have developed sophisticated information-warfare capabilities.[1][2]

These actors deploy coordinated networks of editors, bot farms, and content creators to systematically alter information on platforms like Wikipedia, academic repositories, and social media.[3] They exploit the algorithmic nature of modern platforms: if they can shift the content that algorithms index, they can influence what billions of people see as “fact”.[4]

Beyond state actors, ideologically motivated groups and extremist organizations like the Muslim brotherhood, backed by the state of Qatar, also participate, often amplifying state-sponsored narratives. The convergence of these efforts creates a complex web of coordinated manipulation that is extremely difficult to trace and counter. These operations are not random: they are strategic, well-funded, and designed to exploit the open nature of the internet’s knowledge infrastructure.[5]

Examples

Falsifying geography on Wikipedia.

Rewriting history is a familiar accusation. The rewriting of geography is less discussed and no less damaging, because it works one word at a time: a birthplace, a border, one name swapped for another. On Wikipedia these edits are neither rare nor hard to make. Sometimes a single editor working for a state carries them out; sometimes it is the invisible hands of the crowd, arriving at the same place with no one to hold responsible. The poisoning is the same.

When Estonia becomes “Estonian SSR, Soviet Union”.

Reported January 2026

Estonia’s official position is that the republic never ceased to exist under Soviet occupation, so anyone born there was born in Estonia. On Wikipedia, that had quietly stopped being true. In January 2026 a journalist found that a single editor had changed the birthplace on nearly 600 profiles of prominent Estonians from “Estonia” to “Estonian SSR, Soviet Union”.[6][7] Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s High Representative, was among them. The edits went beyond biography. On the War of Independence, “defensive campaign” became “offensive campaign”, and the founding of the republic was recast as separatism from Russia. The rule requiring Soviet-era names had been adopted in community votes that, according to the chair of Wikimedia Estonia, no identifiable Estonian account had joined. He named participants from Canada and from Yemen.[6] When Estonian volunteers tried to restore the articles, they were the ones banned, for pushing a nationalist narrative.[6][8]

When Jerusalem becomes “a city in the Southern Levant”.

Disputed since 2003

The English Wikipedia article on Jerusalem names no country. It calls the city “a city in the Southern Levant”, says both Israel and Palestine claim it as their capital, and adds that neither claim is widely recognised internationally.[9] That wording is the product of the longest-running content dispute on the site, argued since 2003 across 149 discussion threads.[10] In February 2025, Wikipedia’s co-founder Jimmy Wales himself had to step in to say that Jerusalem is in Israel.

Jerusalem is not an isolated entry. University researchers have documented sustained, coordinated editing across the entries on Israel, Palestine and Zionism, a topic area in dispute on Wikipedia for more than twenty years.[11]

Those who push back are the ones who pay. Larry Sanger co-founded Wikipedia and wrote its original commitment to neutrality. In May 2026 he proposed that Wikipedia make room for a wider range of views. A month later, a group of administrators — the “consensus” of a mob — blocked him indefinitely.[12]

Defend truth at the source.

This challenge cannot be solved by chasing false narratives after they spread. By then, they are already symptoms of a much deeper problem. The real challenge lies in the knowledge infrastructure itself, and increasingly in the AI systems trained on it. What those systems learn today, they will repeat for years. Defending truth today means ensuring that reliable, evidence-based knowledge is present wherever people scroll, search, learn, and ask questions, before poisoned knowledge takes its place.

That is what HereForGood is built to do.
